Nicotinamide Riboside (NR) supplements

Nicotinamide Riboside is a naturally existing compound that’s a member of the vitamin B3 family. It’s also referred to as NR. It’s used as a predecessor of NAD+ (nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide), a coenzyme that’s involved in various biochemical processes in the body.

NR as NAD+’s forerunner

NR is a precursor of NAD+. That might sound complicated, but it’s not as bad it sounds.

Imagine the human body as a machine that continually requires energy to function well. Similar to a motor, our body needs fuel to work. In this case, NAD+ is a type of fuel that helps the execution of various biochemical processes in our body.

This is where Nicotinamide Riboside comes in. It’s a building block that our body can use to produce NAD+. Our body absorbs Nicotinamide Riboside and converts it to NAD+ that can then function as a coenzyme. A coenzyme can be regarded as an assistant involved in various chemical reactions in our body.

Nicotinamide Riboside can be gained from food sources like milk, brewer’s yeast, and other products. It can also be produced by the body from other compounds, such as niacin (vitamin B3).

NR as we age

As we get older, our body changes in various ways. This influences the way our bodily processes work. One example of this is the metabolism, which is responsible for converting food to energy. The metabolism usually slows down when we age, which means we burn less calories. This is caused by different factors like losing muscle mass and hormonal changes. By staying active, exercising regularly, and eating healthy, we can keep our metabolism healthy as we get older.

What does Nicotinamide Riboside do in our body?

Because of strict EU laws, we can sadly enough only share limited information about the way many natural products work. We’re not allowed to share results from scientific research.

We can inform you about this personally. You can contact us for further information about the way NR supplements work.

NR or NMN supplements

NMN (Nicotinamide mononucleotide) is a different supplement that’s popular among older people. Because of how new it is, it’s currently not legal to be sold in the Netherlands. Like with every new supplement, it’s first being tested on its safety.

NR and NMN can both be converted into NAD+. The body does this on its own, and NAD+ is then absorbed by the cells.

NR and NMN are chemically identical, with the exception of one extra phosphate group in NMN. Because of that, NMN is a larger molecule. This extra phosphate group in NMN has to be removed by the body, which is why it’s converted into nicotinamide riboside before it can enter the cell.

NR can be directly absorbed by cells. The very similar NMN first has to be converted into NR, and then into NAD+. It’s an extra step.

Basically, NR is more easily absorbed by the body. Other than that, NR and NMN have the same health advantages. On the other hand, NMN molecules are more equal to NAD+, which means that there’s less of the molecule that’s lost.

Both have their advantages.
